THE MIDDLE EAST PEACE NEGOTIATIONS
GLOSSARY OF NEGOTIATING BODIES
THE BILATERAL TRACK
===================
1. Israel - Palestinians
------------------------
a. Bilateral talks will continue in Washington D.C. under the Madrid
formula with a separate Palestinian delegation, on the implementation
of interim self-government, elections to the Palestinian council and
related issues.
- Date for next round of talks has not yet been set.
b. Liaison Committee (Cairo) - To provide for the smooth implementation
of the Declaration of Principles (DOP) and to deal with issues
requiring coordination, and any other questions that may be referred
to it by other negotiating committees. (DOP Article X) First meeting
held October 13, 1993. Will reconvene periodically as needed.
- Israeli delegation headed by Foreign Minister Shimon Peres.
c. Coordinating Committee (Taba - Cairo - El Arish) - To implement the
Gaza/Jericho agreement. First meeting held October 13, 1993. Will
convene regularly during the next two months.
- Israeli delegation headed by Deputy Chief of Staff Major General
Amnon Shahak.
d. Economic Cooperation Committee (Paris) - To develop and implement in
a cooperative manner projects in the areas of water, electricity,
finance, transport and communications, trade, industry, labor, social
welfare, etc. (DOP Article XI)
- Israeli delegation headed by Finance Minister Avraham Shohat.
e. Israel-PLO-Jordan-Egypt Continuing Committee - To discuss the
admission of persons displaced from the West Bank and Gaza in 1967
and other issues of common concern. (DOP Article XII)
- To be established.
2. Israel - Jordan

a. Bilateral peace talks in Washington - Talks will continue under the
Madrid formula with a separate Jordanian delegation on the
implementation of the Common Agenda signed on September 14, 1993.
b. At the White House meeting with FM Peres and Crown Prince Hassan, it
was agreed to set up a tripartite Israel-Jordan-US Committee to
discuss economic cooperation.
- Convened in Washington D.C., November 30, 1993.
3. Israel - Syria

a. Bilateral peace talks in Washington will continue.
- Israeli delegation headed by Itamar Rabinovich.
4. Israel - Lebanon
-------------------
a. Bilateral peace talks in Washington will continue.
- Israeli delegation headed by Uri Lubrani.
THE MULTILATERAL TRACK
======================
1. Steering Committee - Comprised of representative of the key
delegations, it coordinates the multilateral talks and sets dates and
venues for the various working groups.
- Israeli delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Yossi Beilin.
- Convened in Tokyo, December 13-16.
2. Working Groups and Dates of Meetings:
a. Refugees - Tunis, October 12-14.
b. Water - Beijing, October 26-28.
c. Arms Control - Moscow, November 2-4.
d. Regional Economic Development - Copenhagen, November 8-9.
e. Environment - Cairo, November 15-16.
